Winter Fashions

The reputation of Kazakhstan’s women for fashion precedes them, and I had been told to expect a particular style of 'Kazakhstan chic' in women’s winter wear.  Next to them, Canadians tend to look rather sloppy, in our big, sporty winter parkas and snow boots.  Women in Kazakhstan wear fur – either fur coats, or coats with fur trim – and typically, high heeled leather boots and skinny jeans.  A Canadian mom adopting here in December was walking around in her red winter parka and baggy jeans, and a man actually thought she was homeless and offered her 50 tenge! (This amounts to about 35 cents.  We joked that she was the only adopting parent to ever MAKE money in Kazakhstan).

Today’s photos are brought to you by Kazakhstan’s winter fashions.  First, a photo of my daughter on her outing today to get passport photos taken.  The photo does not do justice to the 5 layers of clothing, winter snow suit, and blanket that she was encased in, but you can see her 3 layers of hats.  The other photos are of adult women’s winter fashions.
